Re:
To the Mayor of Windsor and Windsor Councilors: As a resident of Windsor, I wish to express my strong objections to the recent decisions of Windsor City council regarding the closure of publicly funded day care centres, the contracting out of the Traffic Violation services, and the consideration of contracting out of garbage collection. These are short-sighted decisions that will only worsen the social and economic fabric of this community. Public day care centres offer critical high quality services to people with limited incomes, while providing fair and appropriate wages to the dedicated qualified staff who work in these centres. Your actions will degrade the quality of day care in this city especially for vulnerable families, and further erode the conditions of employment for day care workers. For a Council that claims a concern for diversity, why is there no recognition that these changes disproportionately affect women and minorities? Your efforts to privatize the garbage and traffic violation services are also extremely short-sighted. There is no evidence to substantiate the claim that for- profit companies can offer the same level of service at lower cost. In fact, just the opposite is likely to happen, as many municipalities across Canada and the U.S. have discovered. Your persistence in pursuing this course of action against all the evidence reveals your true intent. This is union busting at its worst, and in the context of all that unions have done for this city, and will do in the future if given the support they deserve, you shame the heritage of this city. In your vision of the future Windsor, fewer and fewer workers will have fair wages and decent conditions, only the rich will be able to obtain reliable quality day care, and the whole idea of the public good will become a distant memory. I have to tell you that this is not my vision for Windsor and such a place is not where I want to live. If you truly wish to turn this city on a new proud course, work with the unions of this city, don't try to destroy them. Yours Sincerely,
